Dahlias Still Life
The dahlias in the garden this year are really showing off! I decided to cut a few to enjoy on my desk. But of course, first I had to photograph them. I thought they'd make a good subject for a short lesson on selecting a background for a still life. So I created a dahlias still life by lining them up on different surfaces to show how mood can change with the only the background changing. The white balance, processing, and light are all the same. Granted, the arrangements are a bit different. But with three various backgrounds, the moods are decidedly different. I really thought I'd like one much more than the others. And, I do. But it wasn't the one I expected! Do you have a preference?Backgrounds are just one of the things I'll be discussing in my upcoming still life photography workshop on the California coast in just about five weeks. The dark slate and white marble backgrounds were manufactured by Medium Backdrops.
