Death Valley Color, Lines, and Textures
Traveling to Death Valley, I knew ahead of time what to expect. I'd been there before quite a few years ago. But, this wasn't the Death Valley I remembered! Let me introduce you to Death Valley color, lines, and textures, the way I saw this national park this time around.Having the extreme fortune to attend the Out of Death Valley conference presented by Out of Chicago, I was in for a major treat! The leaders had organized the conference with great detail. From the speakers to the accommodations, everything was fantastic. It was a time to learn, interact with other photographers of all skill levels, explore, engage, and consider all things photography related while feeling like I was being spoiled. And, in fact, I was.
Twenty Mule Team Canyon
The first evening's outing was to 20 Mule Team Canyon. Truth be told, I was not excited as I was expecting that we'd be photographing the wagons that carried the borax pulled by the 20 mules those many years ago. Yep. Boy, was I wrong. The canyon had nothing to do with the wagons or the borax or the mules for that matter. It had everything to do with color, lines, and texture. And, shadows and light. Such beautiful light! I thank John Barclay for guiding us up to the ridge and turning us loose with these amazing views.
Dantes View
The following morning it was off to Dantes View. Windy and freezing cold, we persevered and it was so worth it! The views were amazing with the colors of the desert coming to life as the sun rose. Could I feel my fingers and toes after being on the ridge for awhile? Nope! But, I was determined to conquer the wind and the cold. You can be sure, I got out the heavy gloves/mittens the following morning and put chemical warmers in my shoes. It's just a matter of wearing the right clothing and being prepared. Just as using the right gear, it all works together. I had David Kingham to thank for the numb fingers and toes. Really, David, thanks so much for leading the way and encouraging me with my own perspective.
