Shot too Tight? Extend that Canvas!
Like many new photographers who start out, I was crazy for taking pictures. I felt that a good photographer really shouldn't need to do any editing. But, I have since learned (some time ago) that this is not the case! 'Putting on the polish' is a very important and necessary step in photography especially if you shoot in RAW. So 'putting on the polish' can be as simple as converting the RAW file to a TIFF, JPEG, or other format with just a little adjusting. Or, it can be as complicated as joining numerous images together, applying luminosity masks, and a host of other things. But today, I want to show you how to fill in the canvas and how to extend the canvas which I use quite often.
Why would you want to do this?
If you want to print an image, or especially, if you want to print a canvas of the image, there may not be enough room around the perimeter of the subject to make for a pleasing picture. The image is squished, or the subject is cut off. There needs to b more room so that the image can wrap around the edges of the canvas while giving the subject a little room to breathe.
Extending the canvas and filling it in are completed in Photoshop. Don't worry, it's really quite easy. Let me show you how.
