Finding Serenity in our Busy, Noisy World

Finding serenity in this busy, noisy world of ours isn't easy. Everywhere we turn there is something trying to grab our attention. Social media, email, news, advertisements, solicitors, spam. There is visual noise each way we look. I'm not talking about the flickering of a screen, of course, nor the digital noise we sometimes get in our digital photographs. I'm talking about all the efforts to draw our attention away from our own peace of mind.

Coping with the Outside World

Each of us has ways of coping with the chaos of our lives, a way to reclaim the peace within. One of the ways I eliminate the noise in my life is by grabbing my camera and macro lens to head out for some solitary shooting. Using a macro lens requires attention to the details of the subject, a study of the lines and form, observation of light, and mindfulness of the background. What is it the viewer is to look at, to see, to notice? How will they be guided through the image to see that?

Macro Photography

Directing awareness to making a macro image allows all other thoughts to dissolve. The outside noise is quieted, both visual and auditory. There is nothing else but the subject at hand and the intention of conveying the subject in a way so that the viewer will be engaged in pondering, discovery, and recognition.

Finding Serenity

With all of that concentrated absorption, how can the busy, noisy world invade our thoughts and prevent finding serenity? It cannot. Serenity is found.

finding serenity with macro photography

One evening just before sunset, camera with macro lens in hand, I went out to the flower garden. I had observed the blossoms that were arriving in my garden earlier in the day. But the light was too harsh then, so I opted for evening. There were still a few bees and butterflies, humming birds, and finches snatching food before settling for the night. They were calmly, purposefully going about their work. So, I did the same. How do you find serenity in your day? I'd love to hear how you quiet the noise that seems to come from all around us.
