Mount St. Helens
After leaving Mt. Rainier last month, I made my way to Mount St. Helens. I remember quite well when she blew her top in 1980, almost 40 years ago. There was ash everywhere even though we were a good six hundred miles away. Ash on the cars, the sidewalks, streets; everything was blanketed with ash for days. Now, I expected there to be more vegetation on the mountain and the surrounding areas. After all, it's been almost 40 years since the huge eruption. But you can still see the fallen tree skeletons in the surrounding hills. And, the mountain itself, remains quite barren. She still rumbles occasionally with a number of localized earthquakes each week.Much like Mt. Rainier, Mount St. Helens creates her own weather with clouds often forming around the top of the mountain. While I visited, her weather was quite active. So active in fact, that she was hidden during the sunrises and sunsets while I was there in July, peeking out sometimes during the day.
Mount St. Helens
Can you see the fallen trees left from the eruption nearby? When the weather didn't cooperate and the mountain was hidden, I turned my camera on to the clouds behind me for some long exposures.Nature always comes through with something spectacular!
