So Many Birds in January 2022

The new year arrived with so many birds in January 2022. When the weather becomes cold and foggy or rainy, getting out for landscape photography is a little more difficult. So, I look for other things to shoot. In the Sacramento Valley, we are in the heart of the Pacific Fly Zone, so there's an abundance of migrating waterfowl. It's always a bit of a challenge to photograph them in an interesting way, but I always try.

Snow Geese

One day I located a flooded field full of snow geese. I pulled the car over, got out, and proceeded to hide behind my car so as not to alarm the geese. Funny that they are not afraid of a car as much as they are a person. I wanted to capture them while they milled about, feeding and preening. Just as I got myself situated, another car drove passed me and parked. I thought they were also interested in photographing (or at least seeing) the geese. I really didn't pay they much attention to them as they were parked maybe 50 feet away.All of a sudden the birds all took flight, so I began snapping away. This was not the photo experience I had sought, but it's what I got. After the birds had lifted a bit, I looked over. The driver of the other car had gotten out, crossed the ditch and was standing at the edge of the field taking a selfie with the birds lifting off behind him. Within seconds, he got in his car and drove away, but not before I took a photo of his license plate. I did have on my long lens after all. You can imagine the words that were escaping my mouth.

So Many Birds

As frustrated and angry as I was at him spoiling my plans of a peaceful shoot, I did get the next picture. I'm sure it is so much better than his selfie. Arrragh! Here are a few other birds I photographed the first week of the new year, along with some interesting rocks. Great Blue Heron, White Crowned Sparrow, three Pintail duck images, rocks, and Trumpeter Swans.
