Fine Art Landscape Mosaics of Death Valley

Standing on top of the ridge trail near alongside several other photographers, tripod next to tripod, I stood in awe of the scene before me. While it transformed with the setting sun, it was a location I’d been to before, but I didn’t remember it looking like this. It was as though I was viewing landscape mosaics, artistic patchworks of rocks, minerals, and soil in colors that are not my idea of a typical desert scene. A desert landscape is shades of brown and tan, or so I believed. This was not Death Valley National Park as I remembered it. It was much more beautiful and diverse than that!

View From the Ridge

The view from the ridge at Zabriskie Point was busy, but not chaotic as some landscape scenes are. There were colors, ridges, hills, and valleys. A wide view from this vantage point is very engaging. But, when I zoomed in to focus on the details of those colors and ridges, that’s when the view through my camera lens came to life. I could see the details of the patterns in the colors, the textures, and the curves of the landscape. The entire scene took on a new personality.

Canon Zoom

By using my Canon 100-400 lens, I was able to zoom in to get those closer views and details that really spoke to me. I’m finding that as much as I like images of the broad landscape, I’m appreciating more and more the close-up intimate scenes that I can achieve with a zoom lens.

Fine Art Landscape

Is there such a thing as fine art landscape? I’d love to hear a debate on this. Can nature produce fine art? Is fine art only achieved by human intention? So many questions. For now, I’ll say it is my opinion that nature can indeed be the artist creating the fine art landscape mosaics of nature. I have seen it first hand!
