Long Exposures | northern California Fine Art photographer
The technique of taking long exposures softens everything that moves within the frame. It gives a gentle, calm feel to landscape subjects. Moving water and clouds are particular favorites for long exposures. While at the beach in February, I spent a morning capturing the ocean waves with long exposures and panning. With long exposure, you simply set the settings on the camera with a slow shutter speed. Then, adjust the other settings to achieve proper exposure. But for panning, you actually move the camera. The amount of movement and the degree to which you slow down the shutter influence the resulting image. So, typically, you pan in the direction of the dominate lines in the scene. But, this morning I attempted some that were opposite. You can really see the progression of color in these as well. The cool tones remained until the sun began to rise turning the horizon and everything lit by the sun to a beautiful golden orange. Here are several of my images from my morning on the beach. Can you differentiate between the long exposures and the panning images?
“You can look at a picture for a week and never think of it again. You can also look at a picture for a second and think of it all your life”
~ Joan Miro
