Elephant Seals Return to Point Reyes NS | Northern California photographer

Winter is the season for the elephant seals to return to Point Reyes National Seashore and other locations along the California coast. This was the first winter for me to observe and photograph them. With park rangers and docents nearby, information about these majestic marine mammals was generously shared.

Elephant seals are not just your average seals - they're the true giants of the seal world. With their distinct trunk-like noses and hulking bodies, they are a sight to behold. These massive marine mammals are known for their fascinating behaviors and unique characteristics that set them apart from other seals. The males’ large, elongated noses, called proboscises, are a distinctive feature that sets them apart from other seals. Adult males may grow to over 13 feet in length and weigh up to 4,500 pounds. The females are much smaller at 10 feet in length and about 1,300 pounds. The northern elephant seal is the second largest seal in the world after the southern elephant seal.

Life of an Elephant Seal

Spending about nine months in the ocean, elephant seals only come ashore to have their young, breed, and molt at which time they do not feed. After the birth of their young, the females nurse them for about three to four weeks, and then leave for the open sea without their young. The pups will find their way on their own, but 50% of them do not survive the first year. Sharks and orcas are primary predators of young. The males leave after the mating season is over.

Human activities resulting in pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change are significant threats to elephant seals and their habitat. Conservation efforts are being put into place to ensure the sustainability of this amazing species.

Viewing the Elephant Seals

Observing elephant seals in their natural habitat is a highlight of any visit to Point Reyes National Seashore. Understanding the best times for viewing and following responsible wildlife viewing guidelines enhances the visitor experience. Winter months typically offer the best opportunities for viewing elephant seals at Point Reyes, as this is when they come ashore for birthing, breeding and molting. During this time, a barrier is set up between the beach and the parking lot so that a safe distance is maintained between the seals and the people. The beach and viewing area are only accessible during the hours of 10 am - 4 pm while staff is in the area to assure protection of the animals. Spring and fall also provide chances to see these magnificent creatures.
