Cleaning Out the Garden
Remember all those beautiful flowers I photographed and shared with you from last summer? Well, it's time to clean that area up and prep it for next year's flower garden. Cleaning out the garden is sort of a sad chore. When I walk out to my garden, I want to see beauty. Currently, most everything has died back or shut down for winter. But prepping it for next year gives me hope. There's lots to do. Removing all the dead plants and those weeds is number one. Amending the soil is number two. But that will have to wait for a bit. And, of course, there is the planning stage which is really fun! What to keep? What to add? Which flowers might I like to photograph next year?
Automation
One of the best things that we did for my flower garden was to put in a drip system. (When I say we, I mean my husband.) The drip is linked to our yard sprinkler system which is on a timer so I don't have to worry about watering regularly. It just happens. Given all the traveling I do, it is such a relief knowing my flowers will be watered.
Fresh Flowers
I enjoy having a garden. It gives me photo subjects and props for my still life work, as well as fresh flowers on my desk or anywhere else in my home. I also feel a connection to nature when working there. Having the hummingbird and birdseed feeders assures I'll always have some company in the garden along with the bees and butterflies.
Plan Ahead
So, start planning your garden now. If it feels intimidating, start small and try a few different things. It's a learning process because some things work and some don't. For me, it's back out to the plot for more garden cleanup and prepping for spring planting. Be sure to photograph those gorgeous flowers!
